Show hided Q&A
Q.

Our inspector found powder post beetles that were alive and crawling around, but no evidence of the holes or powder. We have had the beetles positively identified as PPB. This is a new construction home. We have not even moved in yet. Is this considered an active infestation if no pinholes can be found?

A.

Currently, it may not be considered an active infestation; however, it can soon turn into one. Since we are unable to determine if the house is finished or not, it is difficult for us to recommend products to you for preventative. If you have done a borate treatment on the wood during construction, that could preserve the wood and provide protection from powder post beetles. However, if you have not done that, there is no way to know if it can be protected against powder post beetles. Unfortunately, for borate treatments, the borate based active ingredient must fuse with the wood for it to give you a lasting residual.
