Temprid SC is a great product for spiders in general. I would recommend that you spray the Temprid on the spider webs and also come in contact with as many as you can. When you spray the spider webs and an insect lands on their web, naturally the spider will spin a web around the bug and ingest it. When they ingest their pray, the insecticide in which the insect had originally come in contact with will spread with in the spider. For Brown Recluse you will have to focus the treatment around crack and crevices.

I live in middle Georgia (Macon) in a rural area. We have a large wooden treehouse/playhouse with attached sandbox. It has not been used much in the last few years since our kids have grown past that phase, but yesterday, in anticipating company with small kids coming over, I went out to check the area and found lots of black widow webs and egg sacs. What can I do? I tend to be organic in my gardening practices, but I realize this may call for more drastic measures. We have also found some brown recluse spiders lately. Please HELP!

Hi guys,

I have just moved to Kenya from South Africa. I have 2 massive female brown widows outside on the patio, one in the corner of the ceiling and one in the fire place which has never been used. They have both started producing egg sacks. I want to get relocate them but not kill them, I'm "nature boy". Any suggestions on how? I have read that they are more likely to bite when protecting eggs.

Hi, we just moved into a new older house and found 2 female and 1 male widows in our basement three days ago. We have yet to do anything to them because im afraid of forcing any we miss into other areas of the house that we actually use. So I'm going to purchase the Phantom insecticide tomorrow regardless but, when you say it's undetectable by them does that mean it will not force them to other areas of the house? Thank you!

Hello Sara,
We do not have any products that will "deter" them and we do have contact kill insecticides. Contact kill insecticides, however, come in a variety of forms and technically, contact kill just means that the insect must come in contact with the treated area for the insecticide to have effect. Phantom is the best product that we have that will kill black widows. It is not an instant knockdown killing agent but it is one of the products we carry that actually have black widows specifically labeled as a target pest. It is a concentrate insecticide that must be diluted with water and applied with a pump sprayer. All treated areas must be avoided until that area has completely dried. If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact us again.

Hi Frankie Eakes,
I'm actually not sure about the air sac biology and don't know if that is true. From experience though, bombs are generally not effective for spider control. You may need to treat manually with an insecticide that will target black widows. We do suggest a professionally done treatment since black widow spiders are potentially very dangerous. If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact us again.

I am having a furnace replaced and heating ducts repaired and reinsulated. Company did a partial repair of the ducts but tells me that the sub basement is invested with Black Widows. They wanted me to set off a bug bomb but since the basement has openings (nets over), and is connected to the furnace was afraid also of fire source. One company wants to bomb it and other said had to treat. Said the spider has an air sac and can hold it's breath in a toxic air for up to 24 hours. true? Anyway, best way for treating under the house..

We have a large population of black widows in our front yard. Last year we killed over forty, removed webs, cleared brush etc. I am looking for a product that I can spray that will deter them and kill on contact. The sprays I've used do not kill on contact, it just slows them down long enough for me to crush. I live in West Virginia and I know that it's inevitable that I will have them but I'd like to use my yard again.

Hi Erica,
I don't think that fumigation is a necessary procedure to treat for spiders or even black widow spiders. You can use glue traps in the corners of homes and also treat the inside and outside of your home with a residual insecticide. We recommend Phantom Insecticide. Phantom can be applied around the entire outside perimeter of the house. Perimeter or barrier treatment usually requires you to spray about 3-4 feet up from the base of the structure and 3-4 feet out from the base of the structure. Target the door frames and window frames as well as other cracks and crevices around the perimeter that can serve as entry points for the spiders and other insects. Inside, treatment with a residual concentrate spray product is limited to crack and crevice treatment. Spray the base board area of each room, target window frames, door frames, and also treat behind and under furniture. All treated areas must be completely dry before reentry. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us again.

We are having a very bad spider problem in our house. I guess it's my fault. I've always left the spiders alone because I don't mind most spiders but now we think we have widows. They do not have the typical red hour glass but everything else is right. In fact they look a lot like the picture you have here. We keep finding very small ones and killing them as we find them, but today I found a larger one behind the oven with a bunch of egg sacks. I really have a problem with widows personally, and I have a three year old, two cats and two dogs that I worry about as well. I'm planning on calling a professional but I just don't know what to do in the mean time since everywhere I turn, behind doors, in cupboards, behind my stove, I keep finding them. I don't want to have to leave my house and have it fumigated but I'm about ready to use those measures.

My home has been invaded by Black widoes and brown recluse. I have lived here (ARIZONA) for 15 years and never seen anything like it. I started spraying but getting out the shop vacuum after 10 pm works best. I have never vacuumed up that many spiders in my life, every night, my husband thinks I am nuts, but spiders come out at night. I found big female Black Widow in the windowsill with ****load of babies on her back, they went in a million different directions but I got them, was horrified. That night took shop vac with light on my head and vacuumed hundreds of spiders in one night, black widows and brown recluse. We moved to new awesome house have seen 15 to 20 Blacks already. My dog has killed at least 10 spiders she is (golden retriver) and has not got sick. She seen them coming across living room floor of brand new house. WHAT THE FU** is happening? They are all over outside of my house!!

IS THERE A NATURAL WAY TO TURN THEM AWAY?? LIKE THE SMELL OF SOMETHING?? A SPICE OR DEODORANT?? FOUND THEM EVERYWHERE UNDERNEATH THE OUTDOORS STAIRS WITH SACS OF BABIES. I HAVE LEARNED THE BEST TIME TO HUNT IS AT NIGHT WITH SHOP VAC CAN GET HUNDREDS THEY DO NOT EXPECT YOU!!!

SOMETHING HAS CHANGED!! WHAT IS GOING ON?? WHY IS THIS HAPPENING??? HAD THE DOOR OPEN AND EVEN HAD A BULL SNAKE COME INTO MY HOUSE??? SOMETHING FEELS STRANGE AND NOT RIGHT. THE ANIMALS ARE NOT ACTING RIGHT. COULD SOMETHING IN NATURE GETTING READY TO HAPPEN? JUST SAYING SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT!!

Hi Ian,
Gees, I don't know if I could handle all that in just 2 days haha but I definitely believe that something weird is going on with the bugs. Probably because of the crazy weather we've been having all year with the crazy ups and downs and everything in between. We're here in Atlanta and I'm not sure what the weather is like in LA (wonderful, I bet) but the bugs (and people) have been going crazy because of the frequent weather changes. Unfortunately, it's nothing we can control so we have to try and be as prepared as we can be. For black widows, there's a lot of recommended concentrate sprays and a couple that actually have black widows on the label as a target pest. Those two are the Phantom Insecticide and Zenprox EC. Since they are residual insecticides, they don't provide an instant knockdown kill and has a slight delay in kill effect, but they are still very effective. There are other insecticides that have spiders on the label like Suspend SC and Demon WP and although they don't label the black widow specifically, I am sure that it will be very effective. If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to contact us again.

Hi Jennier,
We check this blog daily, although it's only during certain hours of the day. I'm sorry we weren't available for you to ask us directly, but remember, we also have customer service phone lines at 1-800-788-4142 that are open Monday - Saturday, 9AM-7PM EST. They might always just be around on the outside, but they have been forced in because of the weather? If your location is having lots of rain or temperatures have started to drop, it may have triggered them to move inside to find shelter. Black widows are surprisingly very fast and although they will normally stay outdoors, there are instances when they will invade a home. Do not be too alarmed because they are still considered an occasional invader. We recommend using Zenprox EC or Phantom Insecticide around the window sills, door frames, and all baseboards, especially targeting corners of the rooms and under or behind furniture. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us again! :)

I don't know if you still monitor this site, but it is about 9pm and I just captured a female black widow about the size of a quarter, including legs. She was crawling quickly across the floor of my carport sized screened in porch. We live in a city! In the past, i have found black widow's under rocks and such in the country, but am shocked to find one here, especially one this large! Any advice as to why now? Why so quick and mobile? I thought they like to hide under things and not be disturbed!

@Aisha

Welcome. The warm winter in Virginia last year prevented the die-off of many, though the lifespan of a female is only about a year. In NOVA, you will find them everywhere.

I've killed 11 at my house, and, for fun, found one at a winery on Friday to prove to a naysayer that they're uncommon.

Good luck!

Hey Rich DeMarco,
The safest way I know for removing black widow egg sacs are to remove them by vacuum and then disposing the bag or tin in a air-tight sealed bag. I hope that helped! :)

Hi Earl,
Although black widows are more prevalent in certain areas of the country, they can most certainly be found all over the country.
Um, just wondering... the picture at the top of the page looks more like a brown widow. I have seen several brown and black widow here in the Baton Rouge area. The legs in that widow picture appear to show some lateral striping and the body isn't shiny black like the black widows I've seen. Looks duller like maybe it's dark brown... I'm thinking if you flip her over the hourglass is gonna be orange... Just saying...

Just today we found 10 black widows in a window well. I am so afraid they will come in through that window, into the basement, which is finished and we are down there all the time. Are they known to come inside or will they stay out? And what do they do when it gets cold? (I am in Colorado)
