How to Get Rid of Subterranean Termites

Subteranean Termite Pest Control, how to get rid of

HOW to GET RID of SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES

Termites live in a colony which means that they are a social insect. Social insects have a division of labor called castes. There are 3 different common types of termites: Subterranean, Formosan, and Drywood Termites.

Subterranean Termites workers and nymphs construct the colony and fix the damages in them. Soldiers cannot eat wood but only defend the colony against enemies. Winged adult termites are called swarmers or primary reproductives. They will swarm up above ground and go mate, which is normally during spring time when the days are sunny, warm, and in high humidity. If you find a winged insect around your home during the spring time it might be termite swarmer so pay extra attention.

The worker adults are the most abundant in number. They do all the work and are sterile and blind. The worker termites are usually light in color with no wings. The adult soldiers in the colony have large, hard heads with large laws. The adult supplementary productive are wingless or have short, non-functional wings. They will replace the queen if the queen is killed and they are high in numbers as well. These termites produce most of the colonies eggs.

The primary reproductive adult is dark in color and have 4 well developed wings of equal length, size, and shape. Subterranean termites can build a nest above the ground and it is called aeria colonies. These nests can survive above ground if a moisture source is available. There can be at least 13-14 subterranean termite colonies per acre, so in a typical home you can easily have 3-4 subterranean termite colonies under the house or around it on average.

Subterranean Termites can eat wood at the rate of 2-3% of their body weight each day which is about 7 lbs of wood. Subterranean termites construct their tunnels of wood particles and their feces.

Many times termites are often confused as ants. The difference between termites and ants are:

  1. Termites antennae are straight while ants are elbowed
  2. Termites have 2 pairs of wings that are in equal length and size, while ants have 2 pairs of wings unequal in length and size.
  3. Termites waists are thick and broad and ants are narrow and thin.

Moisture is essential to termite survival. Since moisture is so essential they will construct mud tubes that will cover the exposed areas. Termites will move up and down the soil to accumulate for their moisture needs. Termites prefer decaying wood because it can be eaten faster and it increases the moisture content.

INSPECTION

Subterranean Termites can be found at or near ground level. You can find infestation usually above the level of the first-floor windows. Examine thoroughly in crawl spaces and basement walls, supporting piers and beams, sill plates, floor joists, subfloors.

Pay special attention to areas where concrete steps, porches, or concrete slabs comes together with the structure. If you find wooden dust around the walls or window/door frames, patio area then it is also a sign of termite infestation. Also swarmer termites will shed their wings so if you see large number of shredded wings then it is also a sign of infestation.

Holes inside the wood are not visible so you can just tap on the wood with your knuckles or a small hammer to hear a hollow sound because the damage wood by termites looks like regular water damage. The type of soil is important on how infested termites can be. They prefer sandy soil however they can survive in many different types of soil as well.

CONTROL METHODS

Prevention:
The main reason on why structures get infested with termites is because the wood is often in contact with the ground. When the wood has contact with the soil it supplies the termites with food, shelter, moisture, and entry into the home which is often hard to know.

The exterior wood should at least be 6′ above the ground level and may require in pulling the soil or mulch away from the structure to prevent wood to ground contact. If there is wood in your crawlspace, make sure that it is at least 18′ from the ground. Doors, stair carriages, posts, etc, and anything that is made out of wood will need to be cut off at the bottom to be supported by a concrete base. If it is unavoidable then you should treat the wood with preservation.

Termites can build tunnels over the wood surface. You should not bury wood, cardboard, paper, or any other cellulose materials because they will attract termites. Mulch and wooden chips can also attract termites because it will give them a food source and a favorable moisture conditions.

If you have to use mulch, do not apply them in contact with the foundation. Stack wooden materials, and firewood away from the structure and elevated from the ground. Vegetation should not be allowed to grow against the side of the structure because it traps moisture causing wood decay. Soil should be sloping so that the water can be drain away from the home. Plumbing and appliance leaks can lead to damp wood in crawlspaces.

You should repair leaks right away and you can place polyethylene sheeting which acts a moisture barrier over the soil in the crawlspace to reduce evaporation from the soil and condensation from the structure woods. Ventilation vents can help reduce moisture problems dramatically. Crawl spaces should have ventilating opening around your home at every 2 sq ft per 25 linear ft of the foundation wall. One of the vents will need to be within 5 ft of each exterior corner of the building.

Treatment:
There are two types of ways to treat termites, but these are not the only ways just the most common. These types are: soil treatment where you will dig a trench and treat the soil also to drill a hole into the structure and apply the termiticides and bait this treatment is where you place wood bait inside a termite monitoring station and burying the station under ground.

Soil Treatment:
This treatment, you will need to treat the soil underneath you home and around the structure. We suggest that you use liquid spray (TERMIDOR SC, BORACARE TERMITE, PREMISE 2 TERMITICIDE, Dominion 2L) using a hand spray.

You should start treating from outside in, because the termites come from the outside, dig a trench at least 6″ deep and 6″ wide all around your structure and apply the liquid spray using the amount instructed on the label at a rate of 4 gallons per 10 linear ft. You will also need to drill a hole on wall and on the sidewalk where it meets the structure if it is necessary and inject the liquid pray using the amount instructed on the label.

When the termites are already inside your home you will need to exterminate them to stop more severe damage. So you will need to drill a hole into the wall near the infested area and apply foam (CB D-FOAM, PREMISE FOAM TERMITICIDE) or liquid spray into the drilled hole. Be cautious when you are applying the liquid spray inside the home because some of the termiticide is labeled only for outdoor use.

Bait Treatment:
As already stated above this treatment is where you will place a wooden bait (FIRSTLINE TERMITE DEFENSE SYSTEM REPLACEMENT WOOD, ADVANCE TERMITE MONITORING BASE , ADVANCE TERMITE INSPECTION CARTRIDGE) inside a termite monitoring station and bury the station (ADVANCE TERMITE  BAIT STATION, FIRSTLINE TERMITE MONITOR STATION ) around the structure.

You will need to place the monitoring stations 3-4 ft apart from the structure and 10-15 ft apart from each station. Once it has been installed, make sure to check each station every 3 months (90 days) and if there is termite activity at the station, you will need to replace the wooden bait with a chemical cartridge (ADVANCE TERMITE BAIT , FIRSTLINE GT PLUS TERMITE BAIT STATIONS) which can eliminate the termites. Repeat this process continuously.

I want to use a bait system. Termites also found inside home in basement What is the best bait system that will kill them fast? Should I also get a pesticide spray for inside on wall joist space where they are in my basement?

    Thank you!

  2. 2

We actually tell our customers that using a termite control company is the best way.
The reason why is that most termite control companies will give warranties, and
in case you find termites inside your home, they will be liable for any repair / retreatment to the affected area.

If you still prefer to do it yourself, I would recommend Firstline Termite Bait System Kit. It’s effective and it’s easy to use. A lot of professionals use ADVANCE TERMITE BAIT SYSTEM, but it could be difficult for
non-professionals to use it. Firstline Termite Bait System is much easier to use.

You simply “plant” the station every 10 – 15 ft around the perimeter of your house (3 – 4 ft away from your house)
and place the bait inside the station. Check it every 3 month. Then, in the cartridges where you see the termite activities,
replace the bait with the chemical cartridges.

You do need to treat your basement, however.
You would want to use PREMISE FOAM TERMITICIDE to fill your wall void where you found the termites.

Good morning, first of all, I apologize for my language, not very good, sorry. I get in touch with you because I am interested in their products against termites. I’m from Spain and I have been asking companies dedicated to this, but their prices are very high, as well as nearly 3000 €.

I commented, I have termites for about three years in and out inside the house once a year, companies that have come to give me the budget, all agree bait treatment.
Will you show me which of their products would suit me well and what is its function?

Thank you very much in advance

    Sincerely,
    Pedro.

Pd. First of all, whether you sell to Spain?

  4. 4

    Hola Pedro.
No hablo español mucho tambien, asi comprendo que su no habla ingles mucho.

    Anyway, talking about termites,
I cannot really say which termites you have over in Spain.
We normally deal with four different types of termites: Dampwood, Drywood, Formosan, and Subterranean.
Dampwood and Drywood termites do not need to contact ground, so treating for them will be
    different from the other two.

    For Formosan and Subterranean termites,
we do recommend bait stations, which you plant into the ground to monitor and treat termites.
For Dampwood and Drywood, you’ll have to use chemicals (something like Boracare, but we do not ship this to Europe)

Since your local termite control companies said bait system,
I would say going with Firstline Bait System will be suitable for you.
It’s easier to use than other baiting systems, and is very effective.
We provide termite controls for local residents, and we normally use Firstline.

We normally ship 24 stations in a box, and what you do with it is
you plant each stations 1 – 1.5 meters away from your home. Each stations should be 3 – 4 meters away from each other.
Each station comes with bait, and you place them inside each stations.

You have to check each station every 3 months.
Whenever you find termite activities inside these stations,
you replace the baits with cartridges, which will kill the termites.
(They will eat them and carry them to their colony, affecting all termites in them and killing them all at once, including the queen)

And we will ship the product to Spain if you pay for the shipping cost.

Let us know if you need more information.

I live in spain in a house of traditional spanish construction which is all concrete & brick, the only wood in the construction is the interior doors & frames. However I have put down a laminate floor with a wooden skirting board(the wooden strip around the edge of the floor & up the wall)Unfortunately subterannean termites have come up under the edges of the old concrete floor & attacked this wooden skirting quite severely & have gone all around the house.(only a 1 storey house)
I don’t think they will eat the laminate so if I get rid of all the skirting & put a barrier under each door frame where it meets the floor can I then treat the door frames with a chemical & if so what?
Also if I take away all the other wood that is in contact with the floor do you think they will go away as their food supply no longer exists?

  6. 6

    Hi Colin,

That’s so unfortunate that through all the concrete and brick, the termites somehow found the wood.
The best method I can think up for you is very effective, but not easy.
I would use Termidor SC for the control of termites. Remove all the hardwood floors, drill and spray the Termidor,
and once after it has dried, which takes about 30 minutes to an hour, reinstall the hardwood flooring.

You cannot use Termidor indoors as a surface broadcast treatment. You can do spot treatments on surfaces that are infested such as your door frame, but you cannot do a broadcast treatment. I would recommend you use if outdoors as a perimeter treatment around your home as well, or to do a trenching treatment.

For trenching, you would have to dig a trench 6″ wide and 6″ deep every 10 linear ft, right next to the foundation of your home and pour or spray 4 gallons of the diluted solution of Termidor into those trenches. The dilution rate with Termidor for the control of termites is 0.4 fl oz to 1 gallon of water. I really do hope this was some useful information for you. Good luck!

  7. 7

I see from your blogs that you recommend termidor s/c for the treatment of sub. termites. Although I have seen it advertised widely, some websites say termidor is only available to profesional contractors, can you tell me what the situation is please?

  8. 8

    Hello Gail,

It is true that Termidor SC is a professionally used product and can only be purchased by licensed professionals. However, we have a broker’s license that allows us to sell it to the general public as long as you are treating for your own property.

  9. 9

    Hi,
Is Termidor SC sold to Canadian residents.

    Thank you,
    Richard

  10. 10

    Hello,

I am sorry to inform you that PestMall does not ship out Termidor over the country borders in the case it may be held at customs.

  11. 11

    Hello:

I have purchased a building in a downtown area where the adjoining buildings are very close or actually connected. This makes it hard to get to the outside perimeter. The building is 100+ years old and constructed of brick. We have found subterranean termites in the wood in the lower floor. We plan to remove all hardwood flooring in order to apply a vapor barrier. I’d like to treat the crawlspace for the termites while the floor is up by trenching around the perimeter and at the pilings. What product would be safe and effective for this application? Thanks for your help!!

  12. 12

    Hello,

    Sounds like an iffy situation!
I would recommend the TERMIDOR SC for you.
It’s safe to use outdoors, and for spot treatments indoors.
If you have any other questions about the Termidor, or how to apply, always feel free to post again!

  13. 13

I have termites coming through my cement floor of the laundry room which is in the middle of the house. We are the second owners of this house and it appears that there are drill holes in the floor where a previous treatment had been applied. Can we drill holes into the floor and pour the Termidor SC into those holes? We have also found termites in the wall of this same room.

  14. 14

    Hi Sammy,

Sorry to hear about your termite infestation. You can actually use the same holes left from previous treatment if the infestation seems to be in the same area. Termidor would also be the best product I can recommend for you. You can use Termidor indoors ONLY for spot treatment (drill holes and inject 2 gallons of the diluted solution per every 10 linear feet on vertical surfaces; drill holes and inject 4 gallons of the diluted solution per every 10 linear feet on horizontal surfaces.) Good Luck!

  15. 15

hi; my name is sam how do you injected the solution in the hole . what and where do you get this product to apply?

  16. 16

went to replace window saw termite damage ripped out kitchen cabinets and wall termites had ate 3 two by fours and a 2 by 10 no visable signs of live termites thought it may have been there for years but now first warm day i see flying bugs by back door and bathroom which is right by kithen house is on concrets slab and brick walls ceramic floor in kitchen how do you suggest to kill termites?

  17. 17

    Hi Sam,

You can either use use just a regular gallon sprayer to inject the termiticide into the hole and it should work just fine (:

  18. 18

Spring is one of the most busiest seasons for the activity of swarmers (termites/ants with wings). Since you have already spotted a possible infestation, it is recommended that you begin with chemical treatment. By chemical treatment you should begin with trenching around the perimeter of your home as close to the house as you can. You can use termiticides such as Dominion 2L or Termidor and apply 4 gallons of the diluted solution for every 10 linear feet. As for your windows and bathroom in which you are spotting the swarmers, see if you can spot any mud tubes or visible areas where you can assume they are actively infesting. Once that area has been spotted you will need to do what they call a spot treatment. You will now need to drill a hole into the wall to inject some of the termticide inside the wall void area. For vertical treatment the recommended ratio is 2 gallons of the diluted termiticie for every 10 linear feet. Once you get the chemical treatment in you should be okay (:

found subterranean termites in my home last year… however I had no idea what they were until this year … I am a young homeowner and seriously overwhelmed at this… my husband was walking by the bathroom and noticed some dirt looking stuff on the wall and I wiped it away and there were some termites in a small hole in the wall… I went to town he next morning and got boric acid and when I got home there were dead winged termites everywhere ( I just thought these were bugs last year) .. anyway I put boric acid everywhere and bought dominion offline which I am still waiting to come in and my husband is digging the trench around the house today… anyways I looked over my house and the only place I found any evidence is right there around the bathroom… we had recently cut out part of the wall to repair shower valves and saw no evidence…. I don’t feel the damage is significant but from what I’ve read the subterranean are the most destructive…. I don’t have the money to get a professional so if u have any suggestions for eradicating them please let me know….I did pour boric acid in the pin holes I found .. which I’ve only found about ten to fifteen holes…. in the same general area… our home is all concrete structure with obviously wood trim and sheetrock walls… please tell me what I can do short of calling a professional…. I want to do all I can…. though I don’t see bait stations working because I live in the woods

    Hello,

I have 2 rooms with softwood floors. Humidty from outside developed underneath my floors and I have got infected by termites.

I bought Termidor online and found a professional. They came here, removed some baseboards and sprayed Termidor, they used a solution mix of 1,60fl oz to 7,50 litres of water (1 US gallon) and sprayed under the baseboards. They also drilled holes at the base of all my door frames and only 2 small holes in the middle of the wood floors.

What are my chances of having the termites removed?

    Was enough Termidor used?

  21. 21

Although subterranean termites are the most commonly found termites through out the United States, they are not as destructive as Formosan termites so don’t worry too much. Since it appears that you already have an active infestation you will need to proceed with chemical treatment as planned. Dominion is a good product that you can use. The trenching ratio around the perimeter of your home should be 4 gallons of the diluted solution for every 10 linear feet. It seems that you have taken all the correct measures and have done your research for a successful do it your self treatment (: Good luck! and if you have any further questions on any treatment procedures, please do not hesitate to ask.

  22. 22

    Hi (:
It seems your exterminators used the exact amount of concentration as recommended on the product label, which is good. Once you finish chemical treatment you should slowly begin to see results. The smaller the colony, the faster the results will become apparent.

    Hi,

Thanks for your feedback. I didn’t mention that I live in Greece.

It’s practially impossible for me to do any digging around my house as there are other houses left and right (their walls and my walls are one).

I’m really paranoid that they will come back, even though I did another treatment of a total of 5 litres of formula. The treatment was done in the 2 rooms with the wood floors as well as the base of all door frames.

I’m thinking that maybe I should buy some Dominion 2L and do another treatment, problem is, that neither Termidor or Dominion 2L are sold in Greece and I have to buy online and pay extortion prices, but again, I imagine this is nothing compared to any future damage that can be done!

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again,

    Christos

I HAVE A SHED THAT’S CONCREATE I SAW SOME LANE OF TRIL GOING UP THE WALL . INEED TO KNOW WHAT THE BEST WAY TO GET RID OF THIS PROBLEM I THINK THERE TERMITES THANK U

  25. 25

    FYI – the article says

“… dig a trench at least 6′ deep and 6′ wide all around your structure …”.

This is a typo, it should be 6″ x 6″ (inches, not feet).

  26. 26

Thank you for catching that for us!! We will have that fixed. We do mean inches though :)

  27. 27

I live in Spain, Signs of Termites at top of wall in lounge (outside wall) and also in my sons bedroom wall (adjoining next house) My house is concrete and there are no signs in any wooden doors or posts. What can I do to treat? Professionals said whole house would have to be treated and cost £3500 Pounds.

  28. 28

    Hi,
I am using a termite company but have a question. There are subterranean termites in a shed and wood pile just five feet from the house. There is not evidence of this type of termite in the structure of the house. Two out of five companies recommend treating the home for subterranean but I have doubts. What is your professional opinion? Can I break down the shed and wood pile to eliminate risk or will they “jump” to the house? Thanks.

  29. 29

    Hi Maureen,

Have you seen any signs of mud tubes along the wall? Usually signs of mud tubes clearly help indicate whether it is a subterranean termite infestation. All subterranean termites need moisture and a colony in order to survive so if they were to have infested the upper level of the outside wall you will likely see mud tubes traveling up towards that area. If so you can perform a chemical treatment yourself called “trenching”. For trenching you will need to dig a 6 inch trench around the whole perimeter of the building or structure in which you are trying to treat. For every 10 linear feet you will want to use 4 gallons evenly distributed through out the trench. I’m not sure about the cost in pounds but hiring a professional can be expensive.

  30. 30

I have oak floors on a slab in So. Calif. I see evidence of termite damage (hollowed out section of the floor). Not sure yet how extensive it is because we have guests and I don’t want to tear up the floor until they leave. The damage is close to an exterior wall (stucco outside and drywall inside). What surprises me is that outside this wall is a concrete patio slab that goes 20′ from the house for the entire back of the house (50′). My best guess is that the termites are coming up from underground through cracks or where the patio slab meets the foundation. The perimeter is so far away from the house, I doubt the effectiveness of trenching. Is my best option to drill through the slabs (both inside and outside) and inject the treatment into the soil?

  31. 31

We have seen on numerous counts termites in our yard and on our trees. I live in Brazil and houses here are made of concrete so our house is not in danger; however, we have had two trees die in the last year. The termites are the cause in the loss of two fruit trees. We have poured liquid termite poison over the yard, but I think it is not getting down to the nests. What else can be done?

  32. 32

Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to give you a treatment plan because they are fruit trees. Most termiticides and even termite baits are not to be used around trees unless they are ornamental trees. I apologize that I could not help you out in any other way.

  33. 33

We have bids from three companies to treat our subterranean termites. One company would only treat the area where we found them. The second company would dig holes and treat the whole house. The third company would dig a trench around the house. I guess my question is can your spot treat for termites or should you treat the whole house?

  34. 34

Hi Wendy. If you have not treated your entire home for protection against subterranean termites in the past 5 years, you should definitely treat your entire home whether that is done via trench treatment with liquid termiticide or with termite bait stations around the perimeter of your house. If you have treated your home in the past 5 years but you have an isolated infestation, you can treat the isolated infestation. The isolated infestation means that the last termite treatment was not done thoroughly enough and there must have been a gap or a window that the termites passed through. For subterranean termites, it’s always recommended though that you treat the ground around the entire perimeter of your home. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask us. Have a good one! :)

  35. 35

Terminix checked my house and garage and said there was no termites however they checked a rear storage builkding and said they found a termite. What I saw was a white spot about the size of a pin. Could this be a termite and if so do I need to also treat the house and garage which are about 200 feet away

  36. 36

Hello Richard. Unfortunately, your description is not clear enough for us to identify it for you. If Terminix said that you do not have termites on your home, they will probably be correct. If you want to do a termite treatment for protection, you may want to install termite bait stations and monitor for termite activity every three months.

  37. 37

We have terrible damage from subterranean termites in a vacant rental property. A company came out and treated the home per their report. According to the billing, the date they treated the house we had heavy rains. In addition, there is no sign of holes drilled into the concrete surfaces where there was no dirt contact. Also, we do not see any visible signs of any trenching around the property. Shouldn’t it be obvious to the eye that a treatment was done? We have not paid the bill yet and are contemplating having another company come out and test the soil around the house for termidor. This just is not adding up.

  38. 38

    Hello,
I live in Spain. We have underground termites which are flying at the moment, and for the first time a number have been found in the house. We. Have a large quantity of wooden furniture and chipboard (particle board) cupboards etc. Will these termites infect the furniture, or will the fact it is all dry prevent this happening?
Thank you for maintaining this website which I have found very useful.
    Mike

I had a swarm occur two wks ago in my kitchen laundry room and my sons bedrm. They came from the same back side of the house. I found them coming out of an outlet in my sons rm and from the seam along the wall in the laundry. I think they came through the window in the kitchen. Upon checking the exterior of the house I found mud tunnels forming up the foundation. I killed them with a store bought product, spraying along foundations and vacuumed them in the house. I also sprayed in the cracks in laundryrm and outlet. I no longer see the swarms, but know that they surely are there. I also found some under several rocks by a wood fence 25ft from house. How should I proceed.

  40. 40

    Hi KC,
Subterranean termites require ground treatment whether you are doing so with a liquid termiticide or bait stations. Ground trench treatment requires you to trench around the entire perimeter of the home and pour in diluted forms of concentrate termiticide into the ground. The product we recommend for that is Termidor. If you would like to use bait stations, although it is safer for both the residents and the environment, it does take time. Bait stations are set up every 10 feet around the entire perimeter of the home and initially, you start by inserting monitoring bases first. After 3 months, you should check those monitoring bases to see if there is any termite activity. If there is, then they can be replaced with the poison bait cartridges. For the isolated areas of infestation both indoors and on the outdoor surfaces, we recommend Premise. Premise 2 is a liquid concentrate that is diluted with water and sprayed onto surfaces. Premise Foam is the product we recommend to treat in the wall voids and cracks and crevices has it has the formulation and ability to expand. If you have any questions about the products themselves or termite control, please feel free to call us at 1-800-788-4142 or email us at info@pestmall.com

  41. 41

    Hello Mike,
Subterranean termites need contact with the soil because of the moisture that is provided from inside the mud tubes. If they are inside the wall voids, that area must be treated. We do not expect subterranean termites to infest your furniture unless they are able to make mud tubes that lead all the way to the furniture. Not only should you treat the isolated areas of infestation, but you must also do ground treatment around the perimeter of the house. This can be done by either trenching around your home or setting up bait stations. Unfortunately though, we are restricted from sending chemically based products internationally and will not be able to send you any termite control products to Spain. We apologize. However, if you have any other questions or if there is any other we can assist you, please feel free to contact us again via email at info@pestmall.com or by phone at 1-800-788-4142.

  42. 42

    Hello Debbie,
Well, that does sound quite mysterious, although even after one day, visible signs might not be seen any longer. However, we do know that if you contact the Department of Agriculture for your state or county and locate the pesticide department, you can have someone go visit your home to test for pesticides around the premises. You should contact them and accurately describe the situation to them. They will be able to better assist you with testing for chemicals around your home. I hope that helped you! :D If there is anything else I can assist you with, feel free to contact us again!
