How to Get Rid of Ticks
HOW to GET RID of TICKS
There are many different types of ticks. However, we will talk about Brown Dog Tick, the American Dog Tick and Deer Tick. Ticks are small, reddish-brown in color and you can see the mouth from above. They are flat and shaped like a tear drop, when they get filled with blood then they will swell. All ticks are blood feeders and they can transmit many diseases. The American Dog Tick does not carry Lyme disease; however they do spread the Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Rocky Mountain spotted fever usually takes about 2-3 days for symptoms to appear. It would start off with a sudden fever, headache, and muscle ache. A rash will usually appear on the wrists and ankles on the second or third day of the fever.
The rash will start to spread, if you have been bitten by an American Dog Tick, then it is strongly advised that you to go see a doctor because late treatment can be fatal. To control American Dog Ticks can be extremely difficult because most of the pesticides labeled for outdoor use for ticks will not exterminate them if they are in large numbers.
The Brown Dog tick and Deer tick will carry Lyme disease. When a person is bite by a tick, they might experience flu-like symptoms and will develop a red rash shaped like a bull’s eye. Since Lyme disease can be mistaken as a flu, most of the time people ignores the symptoms, however if it is not treated immediately then it can lead to more serious health issues. The preferred host for ticks is dogs. However American Dog Ticks will use humans as hosts too. They will attach themselves to ears and between the toes on dogs and lay their eggs on the back, but that area is not the only place that they can. Ticks can be transferred from other dogs as well.
INSPECTION
Ticks usually live in areas that are high in humidity and commonly found in grassy, bushy, wooded, and shaded areas.
CONTROL METHODS
Preventions:
Few steps that you can take to control the infestation of ticks is to
- Well clip grass
- Remove the bush near your home
- Pruning trees to allow more sunlight to go through the soil surface and it will not be attractive to the ticks because the sunlight makes the humidity disappear.
- If you have a dog, after a walk or a vacation, make sure to inspect the dogs fur coat thoroughly to see any sign for a tick.
To control ticks outdoors so they don’t get transmitted inside, you can use liquid spray (LambdaStar 9.7% CS, FenvaStar EcoCap ) using a hand sprayer (CHAPIN 1 GALLON SPRAYER), or granule (BIFEN GRANULES) using a hand spreader (HANDLE SPREADER).
Using the amount instructed on the label for liquid spray and granule. Apply the solution and granule uniformly on the lawn entire lawn, large turfs, and other landscaped areas. Apply on bushes, wooded and shaded areas as well. If there is already a tick infestation inside the home, you can use liquid spray (LambdaStar 9.7% CS, FenvaStar EcoCap ) using a hand sprayer (CHAPIN 1 GALLON SPRAYER) with a mist and pinpoint nozzle, dust (DELTA DUST) using a duster (BELLOW BULB DUSTER ) and aerosol ( ULTRACIDE AEROSOL ).
Using the amount instructed on the label, apply the liquid solution and aerosol around window/door frames, window sills, cracks and crevices, near pet areas, baseboards, corners, storage areas, closets, around utility pipes, attics and eaves, cabinets, sinks, furnaces, stoves, behind and under refrigerators, and carpets. Pay special attention to pet areas.
Ticks may be on the bed and furniture as well so we suggest STERI-FAB, it is safe to be used on beds and furniture. After the application of liquid solution, aerosol, and STERI-FAB, leave the house for about 3 hours and ventilate the house once you come back only if you sprayed the whole entire carpet, or mattress. After you come back home, steam vacuum the home thoroughly.
Reapplications may be needed. If that is the case, reapply to retreat the home. If there is a tick attached to your dog we suggest you use PETCOR FLEA SPRAY (DOGS AND CATS), you will spray individual tick thoroughly until wet then give the dog a bath.

Are you asking whether it’s safe for dogs?
I cannot know which product you are talking about, so let me just go over all of them.
You cannot use any pesticides directly unto the pets except Petcor Flea Spray.
All the other spray / aerosol products (Cynoff WP, Cyper WP, Demon WP, Suspend SC, Masterline Bifenthrin 7.9, Bedlam, Alpine, Ultracide, Precor 2000, V Clean-Out, Steri-Fab) are
Pet-safe once they are dried.
Granule products are pet-safe after 24 hours after you water it.
If you can let me know which product you are talking about,
I can give you more in details.

Hello!
We have a 45 acre property, about half woods and half grass. Ticks are everywhere. You cannot sit on the grass without getting one or two on you. It is disgusting and discouraging.
I would like to treat the grassy areas to knock down the tick population. I am concerned, however, with runoff into our lake. I see that some of the products (like Suspend SC, at least) are dangerous to fish. Is this true for rain runoff or only if directly sprayed in the water?
Do you have any suggestions about how to proceed?
Thanks!

I am very sorry to hear about the tick infestation.
For your case, I would recommend using a granular insecticide along with an IGR (Insect Growth Regulator). You would spread the Talstar EZ Granular Insecticide usuing a Handle Spreader. If the granular were to get wet, perhaps from the rain, it is alright because the insecticide will soak into the ground and we usually recommend that you hose down the area after application.
We also recommend the Archer Insect Growth Regulator for the discontinuation of the reproduction of your targeted pest. You would have to spray this with a Chapin 1 Gallon Sprayer; 1 oz of the Archer IGR to 1 gallon of water. This actually prevents the ticks from being able to reproduce which will ultimately rid you of your pest.
You do not have to worry about the rain and insecticide running off into your pond, as long as it has been left to dry for 2-3 days it should be fine.

I have 3 cats, 1 dog and both the dog and I have had a few rounds of Lyme disease. I don’t want to use chemicals because the animals eat the grass. I have heard of EcoExempt IC2. does it work at killing the ticks. Is it toxic to the well water and animals. How about Astro permethien ?
Thanks

Hello,
EcoExempt IC-2 is very low in toxicity and pet- safe.
The active ingredients are rosemary oil and peppermint oil.
Althought it is very safe, I would not recommend that EcoExempt IC-2,
or any liquid insecticide for that matter, is safe for the well water.

Lately I have been finding ticks everywhere, we have two indoor small dogs and a cat who likes to sneak inside. Ive found ticks on me and on our furniture. I also have a toddler so I am wondering what would be the safest method to treat tick infestation both in the house and in the yard? We bathe the animals often and spend hours picking out the ticks from the dogs. Ive also purshased an outdoor/indoor insecticide spray but it doesnt seem to be helping.

ticks, ticks, ticks, I have had more than I can handle. I take care of cats, and dogs only for them to jump off of them on to me. I have scars all over me from those little rascals. April to August all I have are ticks I have one inside dog I have to pull ticks off of constantly. I have 20 yes, 20 grandchildren I can’t have here because I do not want them sick with ticks. I have a stocked pond, chix and cattle. Give me something safe!!!! Where do they go in August????

Hi Heather,
You can use a granule to treat outdoors and prevent ticks from entering your home (http://www.pestmall.com/tick-granules/). For indoors, you can use a liquid insecticide such as Talstar Pro or Suspend SC. Unfortunately, all pesticides contain some level of toxicity, but as long as you keep your pets and children out of treated areas for at least 3 hours, it should be safe for re-entry. However, please thoroughly read the product labels to get a more precise time frame.

Hi Gayle,
It’s probably the weather that kills them off in August. For starters, I think you should start off on the outside. As I mentioned in my previous comment, you definitely want to look into our granules that will target ticks: http://www.pestmall.com/tick-granules/. Just apply them outside as directed by the product label and you will hopefully see a good decrease in tick numbers. Check out the rest of our flea products here: http://www.pestmall.com/tick-control-products/. Among these products, I recommend using the Suspend SC or Talstar Pro for indoors. You can also use the Petcor spray on your cats and dogs! However, because I don’t know the exact specifics about your situation, I think you should call the manufacturers of every product you decide to buy and make sure that it is safe to use near your animals and plants and grandchildren.

Hello Jesus,
The best spray that we can recommend is Demand CS. If you have animals, pets, or children, all treated areas must be avoided until that area is completely dry. Archer IGR should be used with the Demand CS. These two sprays are sprayed once every 3-4 months. Treat only ornamentals and lawns but not in gardens that bear fruit or vegetables. If you have any other questions about tick control or other recommend products, feel free to call us at 1-800-788-4142.

Hi Danielle,
Unfortunately, we don’t have any preventatives for your bed, but we can recommend the Bed Bug Tent. The tent has a mesh that is small enough for even the nymphs of bed bugs and so it will definitely keep ticks out. If not, we recommend spraying Demand CS around the base boards of the room and around the immediate area around the bed. Unfortunately though, you cannot use Demand CS directly on the bed. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us again.
