On a summer night after you walk out of the store, you might look up at a lamp post and find swarms of insects and flies hovering underneath the light. There are several different theories as to why an insect is attracted to lights. Whatever the reason may be, ultimately, insects are attracted to light; ultraviolet lights to be more precise. That is exactly why the fly lights that are provided here at Pest Mall are so effective. There is a fly light trap that is fit for any type of environment or infestation whether it is in a commercial area or a residential area.

Insect light traps are the most effective when they are properly placed and may not eradicate an entire infestation. For detailed guidance on where and how to use a fly light, call to talk to a Pest Mall technician at 1-800-788-4142.

Glue Based Fly Light Traps

There are typically two types of light traps that are made available to the public. Initially, UV fly light traps were zap traps that made use of a UV light source and electric currents to attract and eliminate flies. However, something that was unacceptable to the health department, particularly in food processing plants or restaurants, were the airborne carcass parts that have a chance of falling into foods. Therefore, the use of glue boards became popular and a glue board based UV fly light trap was manufactured to facilitate areas that may involve processing and serving food.

Pest Mall knows and understands that glue based UV light traps are the most effective for fly control in both large and small areas. Not only do the fly lights that are provided here cover a large area, but glue boards are especially effective in attracting flies. Flies are attracted to UV lights, but they are also meant to reproduce. Many of the glue boards that are manufactured in the market now are made with natural pheromone attractants. These pheromone attractants can actually reach areas that the light cannot. Therefore, using a pheromone based glue trap in conjunction with a UV light make these traps irresistible to the flies that are contaminating areas in your home and restaurant.

Fly Light Trap Designs

Although fly lights are highly effective in attracting and trapping flies, most people will agree that the collection of flies and various build up on the glue boards are offensive. There is no way a customer would enjoy the sight of a board full of dead insects in a dining hall or a hotel lobby. Another problem that many business owners may experience is that a small fly light trap may only cover a limited area and are reluctant to purchase more than one trap. Pest Mall carries a variety of heavy duty traps that covers larger areas that can be made useful in warehouses or food processing plants. Also fly lights with a sleek design are available that are just as effective but will completely hide the unnecessary sight of dead bugs. Whatever the special needs of your facility are, there is a trap that will properly target all areas of your business or home.

Insect light traps are the most effective when they are properly placed and may not eradicate an entire infestation. For detailed guidance in where and how to use a fly light, call to talk to a Pest Mall technician at 1-800-788-4142.

Q. Fruit fly trap
I own a small winery and during the harvest and wine production season we have an abundance of fruit flies. We have about 400 square feet of space and was wondering what model would work the best.
A.   It's difficult to get rid of fruit flies with just traps, especially in a winery where there is a competitive food source that is more attractive than lights and pheromones. Any of the light traps will work with correct placement, but they will not be able to eradicate the infestation during this season.

Q. bug light
I'm looking for a light zapper or trap that can be used in a commercial kitchen. Would you be kind enough to recommend something?
A.   We recommend the Vector Plasma Fly Light Trap. For a commercial kitchen, it is important that you do not use a zapping fly trap as it goes against regulations. The Vector Plasma Fly Light Trap is a glue board base that is lured by the light but is trapped on the glue.

Q. bug zappers
The scientific studies I have read state that among the Diptera NONE are attracted to bug zappers, which tend to kill moths in inordinate numbers along with one or two species of beetles. Originally marketed against mosquitoes, they do not attract mosquitoes, at all, and I am unaware of any species of fly that actually pays any attention to them. (For one thing, most flies--unlike their mosquito cousins--are diurnal rather than nocturnal and the special lights used by bug zappers are poor competition for the sun.) So, what makes your fly zappers work?
A.   Most of our fly light traps are not zapping traps but are glue board based. There are a few large, commercial traps that are zapping traps, however, most of our standard light traps are glue board based. They attract flies in two different ways. One is the UV light from the traps. The second is the pheromone from the glue boards. The glue boards that are used in most of our traps are pheromone based, which is a natural hormone attractant.
