Growth Regulators(IGRs)

Growth Regulators(IGRs)

The concept that if something is not fully matured or developed, then it cannot perform to its fullest capability actually holds true even with insects. That is why the top manufacturing companies have developed chemicals that can actually halt the developmental cycle of insects. If an insect is not able to fully mature, then of course, they will not be able to reproduce. When a person stops the reproduction cycle of some of the most social insects like cockroaches, ants, fleas, and etc., they are able to drastically control the size of the infestation before it gets out of hand. You will find that many professional pest control management companies will apply insect growth regulators (IGRs) in conjunction with a chemical that will kill the insects. Pest control companies, as well as Pest Mall, understand the numerous benefits of controlling the reproduction cycle. Therefore Pest Mall has gathered a variety of growth regulators and has made the IGRs that were only once available to professionals, now available to the general public.

Although IGRs are “reduced risk” and do not have a killing effect, they are chemicals that could potentially prove as a health risk if used incorrectly. Read all product labels thoroughly before applying an IGR. To seek help in selecting the correct IGR for your insect infestation, feel free to contact a Pest Mall technician at 1-800-788-4142.

What Are Growth Regulators (IGRs)?

Insect growth regulators (IGRs) are chemicals that have inhibit the growth or development of insects. There are several different ways an IGR will work but typically, they will interrupt the life cycle during the egg stage or the larval stage of development. If the insect cannot mature to the adult stage, then the insect cannot reproduce. IGRs actually do not have a killing effect. Moreover, they are not actually considered “toxic” and in fact, they are actually just labeled “reduced risk” because the IGR only targets the insects while they are in their juvenile stage.

Why Use Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs)

All insects go through a full cycle of development and will go through several different stages before they fully mature. For example, cockroaches have the ability to grow out of their exoskeleton and develop new ones as they grow and continue to molt as they develop to adulthood. Or another example is that fleas develop from an egg to a larva, pupa, and finally an adult. When these insects are exposed to a growth regulator, they are unable to continue their development. Cockroaches cannot molt to the next stage and fleas are unable to develop from a larva to go into the pupa stage. Therefore, they are unable to fully mature and hence, they are unable to reproduce. If an adult cannot reproduce, their population drastically drops and the infestation becomes less severe. Stopping their population growth is crucial to gain control of social insects, especially if the insects have an alarmingly fast reproduction rate. Moreover, most of the common pests are targeted by growth regulators which include cockroaches, fleas, bed bugs, ants, mosquitoes, and etc.

Use Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) Effectively

Since insect growth regulators do not actually have a killing effect but they target the developmental stages of an insect, it is always best to use an IGR in conjunction with an insecticide that has a contact or knock-down kill effect. Many of the pest control products that are made available are compatible with an IGR. As a matter of fact, some of the popular aerosol products have an IGR already mixed into the solution. Although liquid concentrate insecticides do not have it pre-mixed into the solution, IGR can be mixed into the same amount of water that is used to dilute the concentrate insecticide. The best time to apply an IGR is as soon as you detect a problem. This is because you want to target the infestation before the problem gets out of hand.

IGR Formulations

There are several different formulations of insect growth regulator that Pest Mall has accumulated together. Insect growth regulators can come in a concentrated form, bait station, or in a pressurized aerosol can. IGR concentrates are meant to be diluted with water and sprayed on in areas like cracks and crevices, under appliances, along the baseboard area, and etc. It can also be used in fogging applications. Bait stations are tamper-free stations that contain enough IGR to last for at least three months. These IGR stations can be placed on window sills, along the corners of a room, on counter tops, under sinks, and etc. Finally, aerosol spray IGRs can be used in areas where regular liquids will not be able to penetrate. For instance, for fleas that bury deep into the carpets or rugs, spray IGR in the aerosol formulation. Moreover, you can use the pressurized aerosol IGR on drapes, other upholstery, in pet bedding, in cracks and crevices, and etc.

Q. What product to get for DrywoodTermite and will you shipped to Hong Kong
My mother has an apartment (on the 9th floor) in Hong Kong and she found termites. I believe they are drywood termites and she is looking for a spray to prevent the termites from developing again. I wonder if you can recommend a strong product and easy to apply - just spraying at the spot will be great. I also wonder if you shipped directly to Hong Kong. Thanks for your help.
A.   Premise Foam seems like the product you are looking for! However, we are unable to ship the product to Hong Kong due to strict regulations on international shipping.
