Adult chinch bugs are about 1/5" long with crossed wing covers. Nymphs are smaller and bright red. Chinch bugs can be one of the most difficult pests to control in grasses and higher application rates may be required to control populations that contain both nymphs and adults during the summer.
Chinch bugs prefer bright sunny areas in the yard and places that have dry conditions. They infest base of grass plants and are often found in the thatch layer. Places where chinch bugs have infected will have a bleached out look at first, turn brown, and then die.
Since chinch bugs live in grass areas, you will need to treat your whole entire lawn, large turfs, and other landscaped areas are known as a broadcast treatment. You can treat chinch bugs by granule (BIFEN GRANULES, TALSTAR PL GRANULAR, MERIT 0.5 G GRANULES, TALSTAR EZ GRANULAR) using a hand spreader (HANDLE SPREADER, HANDY GREEN II SPREADER), liquid spray (MERIT 75 WP) using a hand one gallon sprayer (CHAPIN 1 GALLON SPRAYER). Using the amount suggested for the use of granule (BIFEN GRANULES, TALSTAR PL GRANULAR, MERIT 0.5 G GRANULES), spread the granule using the hand spreader (HANDLE SPREADER, HANDY GREEN II SPREADER) on your whole entire lawn, large turfs, and other landscaped areas. Irrigate your lawn after applying the granule to activate the granules. For liquid application (MERIT 75 WP), you will need to follow the instructed amount and spray using a mist nozzle on your hand sprayer (CHAPIN 1 GALLON SPRAYER).
