HOW to GET RID of SILVERFISH

A silverfish is around 1/2' long and it is silver. The body is long, slim, and flat. It is wide in the front but gets closer together at the end. Silverfishes moves extremely fast but once the silverfish finds a food source that it likes, it will tend to stay close to it. They are nocturnal so they are active at night or in dark places throughout the structure. An adult silverfish molts it skin throughout the year so it can be something useful in detecting silverfish. They can do damage to book bindings, wallpaper, paper goods, and dry foods. They might eat holes through the wallpaper to get to the glue or bite tiny holes in fabrics (i.e. cotton, linen, and even silk). Silverfish might leave a yellow stain on the fabrics.

SILVERFISH INSPECTION

Silverfish can be found in dark, moist, and moderate temperatures. You will find them under the sink, in basements, kitchens, closets, shelves, behind baseboards, window/door frame, wall voids, and laundry rooms. They like to eat wallpaper paste, natural textiles, books, and papers; they also consume fungi/mold.

SILVERFISH CONTROL METHODS

Prevention:

  1. Fix any source that causes moisture like flawed plumbing or condensation because silverfishes are attracted to moisture.
  2. Dehumidifying will help reduce the moisture content in the air. Some ways you might help dehumidify are fixing leaking pipes, ventilate closed off rooms and attics, draining standing water, and using a dehumidifier air conditioners.
  3. Vacuum cracks and crevices with a narrow vacuum tip
  4. Remove food sources and store them in tight containers.
  5. Insulate your attic

Since silverfishes come in from the outside, you will need to treat outside to help prevent infestation inside.

You can treat silverfishes by liquid spray (CYONARA 9.7, MASTERLINE BIFENTHRIN 7.9) using a hand sprayer (CHAPIN 1 GALLON SPRAYER), granule (BIFEN GRANULARS) using a hand spreader (HANDLE SPREADER), aerosol (V ONE PYRETHRUM, ALPINE AEROSOL), dust (DELTA DUST, PYGANIC DUST) using a duster (BELLOW BULB DUSTER) and station (DEKKO SILVERFISH PACKS).

For outdoor treatment, you will need to use a liquid spray (CYONARA 9.7,MASTERLINE BIFENTHRIN 7.9) with a hand sprayer that has a mist nozzle tip (CHAPIN 1 GALLON SPRAYER), and granule (BIFEN GRANULARS, ) using a hand spreader (HANDLE SPREADER).

Using the amount instructed on the label and apply it around your structure uniformly. This treatment is called a barrier treatment or also known as a perimeter treatment. This treatment will create a barrier around your home to prevent silverfishes from coming into your home.

You will also need to treat your whole entire lawn, large turfs, and other landscaped areas. When using granule, you will need to irrigate the treated area to activate the granule.

For indoor treatment, the silverfish can hide in cracks and crevices so you will need to use dust (DELTA DUST), liquid spray (CYONARA 9.7, MASTERLINE BIFENTHRIN 7.9), aerosol (V ONE PYRETHRUM, ALPINE AEROSOL), and stations (DEKKO SILVERFISH PACKS).

Apply the dust (DELTA DUST, PYGANIC DUST) using the duster (BELLOW BULB DUSTER) into cracks and crevices of your home. Apply it uniformly and DO NOT OVER USE DUST. Do not apply dust where children and pets can touch.

Following the instructed amounts for liquid spray (CYONARA 9.7, MASTERLINE BIFENTHRIN 7.9) on the label, spray around window/door frames, in basements, in baseboards, closets, and any place where there is silverfish activity using a hand sprayer (CHAPIN 1 GALLON SPRAYER).

Using aerosol (V ONE PYRETHRUM, ALPINE AEROSOL), spray around window/door frames, in kitchens, and on walls. Since the silverfish comes into homes through cracks and crevices, it might live in the voids in the walls, if that the case, you will need to make an access (i.e. drill a hole into the wall and/or removing the electric outlet cover) and apply dust (DELTA DUST) using a duster (BELLOW BULB DUSTER,) into the hole, however not directly because the dust might blow back out, you will need to spray the inside around the hole.

For aerosol treatment in a void, you will need to attach a thin straw to the aerosol and spray it into the access. When using aerosol (V ONE PYRETHRUM, ALPINE AEROSOL), be cautious around electric objects because aerosols are a liquid spray. You can also apply aerosol onto shelves, but first remove everything on the shelves before application.

Do not replace objects back to the shelves until the aerosol has dried completely. Clean the shelves thoroughly before replacing objects onto the shelves. You can use the station (DEKKO SILVERFISH PACKS) and place 2-3 of them in closets, drawers, bookcases, in basements, and any where else that silverfishes inhabit. You will need to replace them every 3-4 months from the date of purchase.
