Bed Bug Symptoms and Signs of an Infestation
Bed bugs have become increasingly infamous as they begin to take over entire homes within just a few days. Contrary to popular belief, bed bugs are not small enough to go unnoticed by the naked eye. However, because of their fairly small adult size and the shape of their body, they are able to easily hide and be concealed in cracks and crevices around virtually any piece of furniture in the room and the infestation can go unnoticed for an extended period of time before it gets out of control. It is important to look for all the right signs of bed bugs so that you can move quickly to eradicate the infestation.
Potential Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation:
- Bed bug excrement can be found along the linings of linens, mattresses, and box springs, as well as in corners and cracks and crevices of furniture. They are small, black spots comparable to pepper-like particles.
- Casings of bed bugs that are left behind as the bed bugs shed. They have a slight tan color or seem translucent in appearance. Bed bugs molt several times and may shed up to 5 times before they are fully developed.
- Bed bug eggs and eggshells can be found in the mixture of casings and feces. They may be hard to distinguish because they are tiny in size (about 1mm) and have a white color.
- Actual adult bed bugs. They are a rust-red color and their size is comparable to that of an apple seed. Although you will find live bed bugs, you will also be able to find dead bed bugs. You can also find nymphs, but because they are almost translucent and much smaller in size, they are not as easily sighted as the adult bed bugs that have already fed.
- Brown fluid spots can also be seen and are marks that have been left behind in areas that the bed bugs crawl.
- Blood stains or smears of blood can be found on sheets or the mattress from crushed bed bugs.
*Keep in mind that these signs are usually mixed together in corners and linings. From afar, it can almost have the appearance of a dirt mixture or mold.
Bed Bug Bites
Bites are a poor indicator of bed bugs, although it can be a possible sign of infestation. It may alert you of a possible pest infestation, but you will not be able to identify the infestation as a bed bug problem until a further, thorough inspection has been completed. There are several reasons why bites are inaccurate and a bed bug infestation cannot be concluded from bites alone.
- Some people do not even react at all to bed bug bites. Some people may react very severely with red marks and severe itchiness; however, there are many people who won’t even react at all to bed bug bites.
- Often times, rashes or skin diseases are confused with bed bug bites. Allergic reactions to food or even dust mites may even have symptoms like itchiness, redness, and swelling of the skin but will not have anything to do with a bed bug infestation.
- There may be other pests that are infesting the home that can bite and be a physical nuisance to people including spiders, ants, mosquitoes, and especially fleas.
Where You Should Look for Bed Signs of Bed Bugs
Of course, because of their flat and tiny size, they are able to hide in virtually any crack or crevice that will allow them to hide there. However, you want to be on the lookout and when inspecting for bed bugs, there are some spaces that are just usually more infested that other areas of the home. Here is a list of spaces that you should be checking when you are inspecting for a bedbug infestation.
- Bed: Bed bugs get their name from hiding close to where people sleep because they are nocturnal and feed during the night and of course, this will be the bed. So areas like the mattress, boxsprings, bed frames including the base and head boards are all areas that must be inspected for bed bugs. You can also check the linen in the corners and edges. Tight cracks and crevices along the mattress and bed frame are areas that you must inspect. You can also check pillowcases.
- Dressers and nightstands: These are usually the closest pieces of furniture that is nearby the bed.
- Sofas/Couches: Many people will usually rest on couches and fall asleep during the night. If the food source for bed bugs is not on the bed, they will travel to where the food source is. Often times, it is the couch.
- Wall pictures and Hanging Fixtures: Often times, they will hide behind the picture frames or even on the underside of the lamp shades.
- Inside cracks of loose wallpaper
- Curtains
- Edges of carpets by the baseboards of the room
- Behind light switch plates and electric outlets
- In cracked woodwork or recessed screw holes
- Wicker furniture
