Termite Identification

In general, termites have the same physical compositions. They have wings that are usually equal in size, straight antennas, and have thick waists. Compared to termites, ants have wings that are usually longer in the front, elbowed antennae, and narrow waists. Many people mistake termites for ants, but after identifying certain characteristics, anyone can distinguish an ant from a termite.

Termites have more than one species which include:

  • Dry Wood Termites
  • Damp Wood Termites
  • Formosan Termites
  • Subterranean Termites

Damp Wood Termite

Damp Wood Termite

  • Damp wood termites are usually of a brownish color and are typically 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch in length. They are considered one of the bigger termites in regard to size.
  • Just like the name suggests, damp wood termites like to infest areas that are moist and damp.
  • Just like the dry wood termites, the damp wood termites do not have a working group. The nymphs are used to serve the queen, king, and soldier termites.
  • Because structures and settlements don’t usually have damp wood structures, damp wood termites don’t usually infect buildings and homes, but homeowners should still be cautious of storing damp wood nearby.
  • To avoid these pests, you should have a gutter that points away from your home and avoid prolonged contact with moisture.

Dry Wood Termite

  • Dry wood termites are usually of a light brown color and are typically 3/8 to 1 inch in length. Colonies of dry wood termites usually include roughly 2,500 termites. Unlike the Subterranean Termites, the dry wood termites do not have a working group – instead, the young termites do all the work before reaching adulthood.
  • Just like their name, dry wood termites like to habituate in areas where dry wood is found, such as the attic.
  • Significant damage can be done by these termites.
  • If you would like to prevent dry wood termites from infesting your home, you should store dry wood and dry wood scraps at least 20 feet from your home.

Formosan Termite

Formosan Termite

  • Formosan termites are of a yellowish- brown color and are usually about ½ of an inch in length.
  • These termites are known as the most aggressive termites.
  • These termites have enormous colonies stored underground and often build mud nests inside the walls of a settlement.
  • With these termites – prevention is key. Because these termites are so aggressive, getting rid of an infestation is incredibly difficult.
  • To avoid infestation, you should avoid water accumulation near your home. Using gutters and splash blocks can help divert the water away from your home. Also, you should attempt to reduce humidity by using proper ventilation.

Subterranean Termite

Subterranean Termite

  • Subterranean termites are usually of a creamy brown color and are usually around 1/8 of an inch in length.
  • In order to reach food resources, these termites create tunnels underground which are usually referred to as mud tubes. These termites are attracted to foods that contain cellulose. They are known to swarm during the spring time to create new colonies.
  • With the Formosan termites being the most aggressive, the subterranean termites are the most destructive. These termites alone are able to collapse and entire building which could be economically damaging.

In order to prevent subterranean termite infestation, you should try to avoid water accumulation near your home. Again, try to divert water away from your home using gutters and splash blocks.

How long does termite treatment last? Do you have to try the ground every year for subterranean termites. What is the most common termite? (Florence South Caroliana)

Depending on the product, the standard residual is 5-10 years for ground termite treatment. But it will really depend on what product you are using. Also, South Carolina’s most common termite species is in fact the subterranean, but since you can also have other termite species infest your home, it really depends on where you are finding your termite infestations. You can always give us a call at 1-800-788-4142 and our technicians can try to evaluate the infestation for you. OR you can always comment again and I will try to help you out the best I can! 🙂
