Often times, tick infestations will be concentrated outdoors. As they wait for a host to walk past them, they continue to breed and reproduce. Just like how a flea behaves, ticks wait for a host and will take any chances at attaching themselves to a host to feed on. Because ticks are a parasitic creature that are also vectors of serious disease pathogens, it is important to kill the ticks outdoors before they infest your pet and inside the house. One of the most effective tick control management methods is to use tick granules around the perimeter of the house and lawn. Tick granules provide one of the longest residual times and the easy application doesn’t make tick control any easier. Moreover, when it is applied correctly, it is completely safe for your cats and dogs that enjoy playing or even roaming around the yard.
These are the same grade tick granules that professionals are using to control the ticks on your lawn so you can trust that they will prove effective in outdoor tick management.
Granule formulations of tick control pesticides provide a contact kill that instantly knocks down any ticks that enter the area that has been treated. Moreover, tick granules are easily applied. They do not require any preliminary preparations or dilution with water. Simply, spread the granule as a broadcast treatment or in bands around the perimeter as it is made and wait for the results. To speed up the activation process, some people will spread out tick granule insecticides after irrigating their lawns. However, not even this step is necessary. Furthermore, granule products have one of the longest residual times amongst all the insecticides that are available in the market to fight ticks. Once it has soaked into the ground, it is ready for treatment and will provide tick control for up to 7 months and will not require a reapplication until after the first initial application loses its residual effects. Furthermore, it is safe for your pets. As long as you let the tick granule sit for at least 24 hours, once it is activated, it is safe for your pets to run around on the lawn.
Ticks typically breed outside and will hitch a ride inside when they find a host. Therefore, it is extremely important to continue to regularly maintain the lawn and lawn pests, including ticks, so that they cannot be brought inside. To allow tick granules to work in its most optimal efficiency, do not make spot applications with the product. Instead, treat the entire area that you know is or potentially can be vulnerable to tick infestations. If there are areas that you know have heavy leaf litter or dense ground cover, these areas can either be eliminated or you can use application rates that are higher than the standard.
Perimeter application involves creating bands around a perimeter that area about 5 to 10 feet wide all the way around and next to a structure and the lawn. Tick granules can be applied as a broadcast treatment to soil areas and ornamental gardens. Remember that these are areas that are not nearby plants that can bear edible materials. Furthermore, granules can be applied in and around pavement crevices, fence lines, and mulch areas.
Keep in mind that some tick species have life cycles that are quite complicated and also the larvae and nymphs usually remain lower to the ground and adults will climb towards the ends of grasses so that it is easier to latch onto hosts. Therefore, tick granules should be applied during the spring season before the larvae and the nymphs have fully developed.
